Q

The main characteristics of Benzene

A

Normal sigma bond and pi bond where the p-orbitals overlap but all across the molecule, giving it a ring of delocalised electrons.

Q

Problems with kekulé’s model?

A

Benzene has a low reactivity but Kekulé’s model should be high. The bond lengths were wrong, expected to have 3 of 0.134nm and 3 of 0.153nm of length. Actually 0.139 nm length. Enthalpy of hydrogenation is expected to be -360KJmol^-1 but is in fact -208KJmol^-1 meaning it’s more stable than originally thought.
