16
Q

What is Qualitative sampling?

A

Descriptive sampling.
Data can be observed but not measured explicitly.

17
Q

Give examples of Qualitative sampling methods

A

Trawls and dredges.

18
Q

Give an example of semi-quantitative sampling.

A

CPUE allows some measure of numerical data

19
Q

How is intertidal sampling sampled?

A

Intertidal is sampled at a series of regular intervals from the high to low water mark with replicates taken at each location. EG- quadrats.
These are quantitative.

20
Q

Describe the qualitative sampling method ‘Riley Pushnet’

A

It is a light metal frame seated on two metal skis.
Net of 5-10mm mesh with finer mesh cod end and a weighted foot rope.
Designed to sample benthic macro fauna in shallow intertidal.

21
Q

What are the disadvantages of subtidal sampling?

A

-More expensive
-Requires ship time
-Weather dependent

22
Q

Give an overview of Trawls/Dredges as sampling methods.

A

-Selective sampling methods(some organisms will escape)
-Skim over the surface of the substrate
-Large swept area (rare epifauna)
-Qualitative but can be used as semi-quantitative

23
Q

What do grabs sample?

A

Suitable for mud and sand sampling.
Quantitative for shallow infauna (top

24
Q

Give examples of grabs used for sampling sand and sediments.

A

Day grab
Van Veen Grab
Peterson grab

25
Q

Preservation method for sampling benthic macro fauna

A

Counter staining
Sortation
Elutriation

26
Q

What is the taxonomic identification method?

A

Technological aids- computer based interactive keys
