benign skin lesions Flashcards
compound nevi
when a juxal nevus extends into superficial dermis with bridges (papillomatous surface)
junctional nevi
epidermis only; flat macular lesion (at jx)
nests along the basal layer
intradermal
when a compoudn nevus loses its junctional component
in the dermis
dysplastic
can arise sporadically, but unclear if they progress to melanoma
seborrheic keratosis can appear on all surfaces except
palms and soles
age of onset of seb keratosis vs nevi
seb keratosis typically appear after age 30 where nevi appear before age 30 (if appear after should think melanoma)
acrochordons
skin tags! fleshy papules arise in axillae, neck, groin, and eyelids esp on neck, upper chest and upper back
etio of acrochordons
genetics
obestiy
friction
can be a marker for insulin resistance
tx for acrochordons
elective, snipping or liquid nitrogen
sometimes just necrose and fall off
cherry angiomas
people can get them starting at age 30 and are likely to get more once they are gone
trunk
harmless
dermatofibroma
benign spindle cell dermal proliferation that appears and has a scar-like texture; rim gets darker with time
legs of women
dimple sign
dermatofibroma
pinching either side of the DF will make it dimple down because of its scarlike tethering of surrounding dermis
solar lentigo
brown macule common seen in edlerly secondary to sun damage, but not cancerous or precancerous
etio of solar lentigo
increase in melanocytes
sebaceous hyperplasia
skin or yellow-colored smooth papules that may be umbilicated on forehead and central face
sebaceous gland- hence the yellow color–umbillication due to gland growth around a central hair follicle
