Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
it is one of the most common causes of vertigo
average age of onset is 55 and less common in younger patients
characteristic feature of Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
sudden onset of dizziness and vertigo triggered by changes in head position
presentation of Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
vertigo triggered by change in head position - rolling over in bed or gazing upwards
nausea sometimes
each episode last 10-20 seconds
positive Dix-Hallpike manoeuvre
management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
epley manoeuvre (80% of cases)
exercises
BPPV prognosis is generally good and resolves spontaneously after few weeks or months
Betahistine sometimes used but are of low value
