Explain the 6 benign inflammatory breast disorders.
A
- Acute Mastitis
- Bacterial infection of the breast due to cracks in the nipple
- Seen in lactation and first week of breast feeding
- Treatment includes antibiotics, breast hygiene and draining.
- Granulomatous mastitis
- Due to systemic granulomatous disorders I.e. sarcoidosis
- Infections like TB
- Nipple piercings
- Hypersensitivity reaction during lactation
- Periductal mastitis
- Mostly seen in smokers
- Nipple inversion
- Squamous epithelium gets trapped in ducts and keratin is entrapped.
- Ductal dilation
- Mammary duct ectasia
- Non-bacterial inflammation of the mammary ducts
- Seen in multiparous women
- Thick white discharge often associated
- Traumatic fat necrosis
- Type 1: seen in older women/ Type 2: seen in younger women (cystic)
- Palpable mass in the breast that feels like a tumor
- Lymphocytic mastopathy
- Single or multiple hard masses
- Seen in type 1 diabetes or in thyroid disease.
