Signs and Labs for a Simple Hepatic Cyst
Signs: none, usually asymptomatic
Labs: normal LFT’s
Polycystic Liver Disease
Autosomal Recessive
-60% have associated kidney disease
Signs and Labs of Polycystic Liver Disease
Signs: none, can lead to infection or hemorrhage
Labs: Normal (unless there’s an obstruction)
What else do you eval when you find a Polycystic Liver Disease
Pancreas, Spleen, and Kidneys
Complex Cysts
Hematoma
Amebic Abcess
Pyogenic Abcess
Hydatid Cyst
Hematoma
- its variable appearance
Acute: hyperechoic, first 24 hrs
Subacute: complex and anechoic
Resolving: anechoic with post. Enhancement
Chronic: Anechoic with calcs
Amebic Abcess
Liver parenchyma destroyed by parasites (protozoans)
Signs: bloody diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue and pain
Labs: Leukocytosis
Sono of an Amebic Abcess
Shaggy walls, mass with debris and septations
Pyogenic Abcess
Usually due to infection and/or trauma
Signs: fever, pain, N/V, diarrhea
Labs: elevated LFT, leukocytosis, anemia
Sono of pyogenic Abcess
1cm or larger
Hypoechoic w/out void margins…could be complex

Increased LFT’s
Leukocytosis
Anemia

Signs: none or a dull abd pain
Labs: none or maybe increased AFP
