Benefits of groups Flashcards
Universality
Universality happens when others have either a shared or similar experience in which members can relate to.
Example: A Domestic Abuse survivors’ group –> people get to feel united and powerful through experiences they share
Imparting Information
Imparting Information happens when members earn educational benefits from their groups. When information is transmitted to them by their peers and they gain knowledge.
Example: A study group –> members transmit their knowledge to others who therefore gain information
Altruism
Altruism happens when other group members provide support to each other and help lift each other up collectively.
Example: Alcoholics Anonymous
Providing Hope
Providing Hope happens when people gain optimism through witnessing the success of their other group members. This makes them feel like their own success is just as possible.
Example: A group of substance abuse in which a member has gotten themselves clean
Resolution of Family of Origin dynamics
This happens when family trauma is being resolved and addressed.
Development of Social & Interpersonal Skills
This happens when a person develops their social skills and break out of their shell and gain a variety of interpersonal skills
Imitative Behavior
Imitative Behavior happens when group members learn new ways to solve problems. This interesting benefit occurs when the group facilitator models appropriate behaviours to use as a response to a situation or during different situations. In time, the members pick up on that behaviour, whether they realize it or not, and begin applying it to their own life.
Group Cohesion
Group Cohesion allows for the entirety of a group to build trust, belonging, togetherness… Doing so might help victims and survivors of trauma trust a person other than themselves and it improves good communication within the group.
Catharsis
Catharsis happens when emotional release opportunities are provided. Allowing the time and silence for members to fully feel their emotions in the solidarity of others.
Existential Factors
Existential Factors happen when people in the group take on and accept the responsibility for their actions and life decisions.
