BENEFITS OF EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Flashcards
1
Q
Why IMPORTANT FOR PHYSIOTHERAPISTS
A
- Keeping people active by preventing and treating a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders is part of our core business1.
- Physical activity reduces the rate of decline in physical functioning and therefore delays the onset of disability.
- Health professionals, including physiotherapists, are in an important position to provide advice on health promotion behaviours
2
Q
WHY IS KEEPING ACTIVE IMPORTANT?
A
Worldwide, physical inactivity has a similar effect on
life expectancy as smoking and obesity
3
Q
Physical functioning
A
As age increases, one’s physical functioning decreases
- rapid decline once hit disability threshold
- disability threshold @ 70 for no exercise vs at 90 for high exercise
4
Q
WHY AND HOW SHOULD WE PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?
A
Physical inactivity is one of the most powerful, modifiable risk factors for health1
The odds are that a high proportion of your clients/patients will be insufficiently active.
On average, 60% of adults are insufficiently active
5
Q
HOW MUCH IS ‘SUFFICIENTLY ACTIVE’
A
- Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2 1⁄2 to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 1⁄4 to 2 1⁄2 hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities, each week.
• Do muscle strengthening activities on at least 2 days each week.
• Minimise the amount of time spent in prolonged sitting.
• Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible.
6
Q
OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY
A
3 in 5 adults are overweight or obese (based on BMI)
Most commonly measured using the body mass index (BMI).
7
Q
Unfit
A
- Fitness is more important than fatness for health
- Unfit individuals have twice the risk of death regardless of BMI, while fit and overweight and obese individuals have similar mortality risk as their normal weight counterparts.
