Believing in God Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Design Argument?

A

It says that the universe is far too complex and ordered to have just ‘happened’; it must have a designer. That designer is God.

Q

Give an example of an argument for the Design Argument.

A

William Paley said that if you found a watch (even if you didn’t know what it was) you would know it had a purpose and had been designed. The designer of all is God.

Q

Give the 2 main arguments against the design argument.

A

-Even if the world is designed it does not mean that God is the designer. Evolution and natural selection accounts for it seeming to be designed. -If it was designed then the designer was not a omnipotent, omnibenevolent designer (as God would be) because there is suffering and lots of natural disasters.

Q

What is the First Cause Argument?

A

Things cannot happen without a cause. The universe needed a cause. This cause would have had to be something extremely powerful that is eternal. The universe was caused by God.

Q

Give the 3 main arguments against the First Cause Argument.

A

Atheists and Agnostics: -The universe is eternal and goes back to infinity -There is a starting point (e.g. The Big Bang) - scientific explanation. -Even if we can prove that the universe had a beginning we cannot prove that the beginning was caused by God.

Q

What are the 2 types of miracles? Give examples.

A

-Events that break the laws of nature (e.g. Jesus turning water into wine) -An incredible coincidence that prevents a tragedy (e.g. A child falls from a balcony and happens to land in a mans arms who happens to have them outstretched at that very moment).

14
Q

Give the Argument for Miracles.

A

There is no explanation for what happens, so it must be a supernatural event therefore caused by something outside of nature. God is outside of nature so God intervened. Therefore God exists.

Q

Give a theist’s argument AGAINST Miracles.

A

There are no miracles because if they existed then God would be choosing who could/could not have a miracle. A fair and loving God would not do this, and God is always fair and loving.

17
Q

Give a theist’s argument FOR Miracles.

A

Miracles are not for an individual’s benefit but instead they are intended to teach us all about the loving power of God and prove his existence.

18
Q

What is the main problem with Religious Experiences?

A

They are very difficult to prove.

19
Q

Give 2 athiest arguments towards religious experiences.

A
  • People can be mistaken because they really wanted to believe that they had an experience with God
  • People may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, causing hallucinations
20
Q

Give 3 theist arguments towards religious experiences.

A

Any 3 from…

  • People are so influenced by these experiences that they must exist
  • People talk of direct proof of experiencing God so God must exist
  • People may convert to having faith or their faith is strengthened so their whole life changes they would not do this for no good reason
  • Some people are prepared to die for their belief after an experience. This would not be made up, so God must exist.
  • Sometimes several people share the experience so they can not all be imagining or hallucinating.
21
Q

What is morality?

A

A sense of right and wrong; being able to think about the consequences of our actions.

22
Q

Give the moral argument (For).

A

Thiests believe that our sense of right and wrong must have come from an external source, as it does not benefit us individually (people even become unhappy for behaving morally). This source must be God (conscience is the voice of God inside our heads telling us what to do). Therefore God exists.

Also (theism)

  1. We do the right thing even if we do not want to so we are obeying
  2. So morality is a command that must be obeyed
  3. The command must come from an ultimate authority
  4. The ultimate authority is God
  5. Therefore God exists
23
Q

Give the moral argument (Against).

A

Athiests say that morality developed with evolution to ensure that people were controlled by laws and rules (as we are more intelligent than other species).

Also:

Atheists/Agnostics say that;

  1. People have guilt feelings because they have gone against their families’/society’s rules
  2. Not everyone feels guilty even if they do something that is thought of as wrong
24
Q

Give the atheist argument for evil and suffering.

A

Atheists say that there is a lot of suffering in the world and it affects both good and bad people, young and old so how can God exist.

  1. Natural disasters and the cruelty of the animal world shows evidence of bad design
  2. People don’t always act in a moral way so they ignore their conscience so conscience cannot be God’s voice
25
Q

Give the theist argument for evil and suffering.

A

Theists say that there are reasons for evil and suffering but they are beyond our understanding and we will never totally understand God’s purpose we must just have faith and put trust in God
