What was Gallagher’s in Belfast?

A

Huge tobacco factory opened by Thomas Gallagher in mid-19th century on York Road in Belfast. By the 1920s, his factory was the largest tobacco factory in Europe and he was the biggest buyer of American tobacco in the world.

Gallagher’s underwent huge expansion in the 1960s but the factory ceased operations in 1988. Japan Tobacco eventually takes over the Gallagher business and relocated manufacturing to Eastern Europe.
