Behavourist Approach Flashcards
What are assumptions about the behaviourist approach?
Born blank slates, extreme nurture end, to be scientific must study in a lab
What are the 2 forms of learning ?
Classical conditioning and operant conditioning
How do you learn in classical conditioning
Through association
How do you learn in operant conditioning
Reinforcement, active process
Describe pavlovs experiment with dogs
Before: bell is neutral stimulus, no response from dog, food is unconditional stimulus, this makes an unconditional response (drewling)
During: bell (NS) and food (ucs) at the same time dog= drewl
After: bell (CS) dog drewls, conditional response
Reinforcement
Trying to increase desired behaviour
Positive reinforcement
Receiving reward for behaviour that’s performed
Negative reinforcement
Avoid something unpleasant when behaviour performed
Punishment
Unpleasant consequence of undesirable behaviour
Describe using a Skinner box (positive reinforcement)
Hungry rat performs exploratory behaviour, accidentally presses lever, food appears, repeats and learns that the lever gives the rat food
Describe using a Skinner box ( negative reinforcement)
rat performs exploratory behaviour, accidentally presses lever, electrocution stops a, repeats and learns that the lever stops current so the rat isn’t electrocuted
