Behaviours Flashcards
Define the term ‘stereotypical’ behaviour
Repetitive behaviours with no function, so for no reason
Define the term ‘atypical behaviour ‘
A behaviour that is not typically shown within a species. It is abnormal and unusual. Eg, head shaking in dogs
State 3 atypical behaviours that a hamster could display
- hyper activity, could continuously run on wheel if feeling stressed
- excessive inactivity, could continuously sleep due to lack of correct nutrition
-Hyper aggression, could become aggressive due to a small environment or incorrect social grouping
Name a species that engaged with allo-grooming and describe the process
Monkeys (chimpanzees) use allo-grooming to show trust and also understanding of hierarchy and the dominant male.
Allo-grooming is where an animal grooms another animal by touching or licking to form a social bond

Explain Tinbergen’s 4 questions
Function- why does the animal do this behaviour?
Evolution - how has the behaviour come about?
Causation- what causes the behaviour?
Development- How has the behaviour develop?
