Behaviourist Approach Flashcards
Watson and skinner
Early 1900s
They were behaviourists beloved that scientific things had to be visible. They argues thoughts couldn’t be scientific as they weren’t visible. Argue introspection wasn’t scientific enough
They used the experimental method
Focused on scientific processes - behaviour should be observable and measurable
Behaviourists believed the use of lab experiments controlled extraneous variable
The biological approach
Developed after behaviourism in modern psychology
Can carry out controlled and objective observation in lab using scans and imaging e.g. FMRI
Key assumptions 1 of behaviourist approach
Focus on observable behaviour
Measured and objective behaviour
Best method for scientific approach is lab experiment
Used animals e.g rats
Key assumptions 2 of behaviourist approach
All behaviour is learned
Normal and abnormal behaviour is learned
Basic process called conditioning
- Operant and Classical
Classical conditioning
Paired or associated learning
Responses are involuntary
Psychological response
Behaviour Learnt when associating different stimuli
Operant conditioning
Instrumental conditioning
Voluntary responses
Behaviour and learning shaped by consequences
