Behaviourism: Classical conditioning Flashcards
Classical conditioning
Learning through association
Process of Classical Conditioning
Before: UCS–> UCR
NS –> no response
During: NS+UCS –> UCR
After: CS –> CR
Neutral Stimulus (NS)
Something in the environment which doesn’t initially cause a response
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
Anything that naturally has power to produce a response in a human or animal
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
Natural reflex response to a UCS
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
NS becomes the CS when it acquires the ability to produce a specific response in the human or animal.
Conditioned Response( CR)
A learnt response to something that doesn’t naturally have power to produce a response in human or animal.
Stimulus generalisation
When stimuli similar to CS produce the CR (phobias)
Stimulus Discrimination
CR is only produced in response to the CS and NOT to similar stimuli .
Extinction
When CR declines and disappears because the CS is repeatedly presented in the absence of the UCS.
