behaviourism Flashcards
what is behaviourism
the idea that the environment and conditioning effects language use
who suggested it and when
skinner in 1957
what did skinner believe
children imitate and copy adults. we are born a blank slate an all behaviour is acquired through conditioning
what are the two types of reinforcement
positive and negative
what is operant conditioning
when behaviour is altered via a reward or a stimuli
what did skinner find within positive reinforcement
as a rat moved in a box it would hit a leaver dropping food. the rat learnt that the action of pressing the lever would cause the positive outcome of food
what did skinner find within negative reinforcement
a rat experienced an electric current which caused it discomfort.as it knocked the lever it would stop the current. the rat learnt that knocking the lever would remove the negative consequence of the electric shock.
positive reinforcement in relation to language
if the child imitates their parents successfully, they will receive praise which will positively reinforce the correct utterances
negative reinforcement in relation to language
when using an incorrect utterance, they are met with no reward, encouraging them to use the correcty utterance
