Behaviour Management Flashcards
Underlying prciniples?
Behaviour serves an underlying purpose
Behaviour is modified according to outcome
Change environment to change behaviour
Draws on operant conditioning
What is operant conditioning? (Reinforcement and punishment)
REINFORCEMENT INCREASES BEHAVIOURS
Positive reinforcement = good stimulus upon behaviour
Negative reinforcement = negative stimulus taken away upon behaviour
PUNISHMENT DECREASES BEHAVIOURS
Positive punishment = doing something to them
Negative punishment = penalty, taking something away
How do you make clear that behaviour and outcome are linked?
Clear
Immediate
Consistent
Contingent
Exploring behaviour problems?
What is the problem? How long? Who is affected? How severe? What else is going on? Why this child?
Formulation of behaviour problems?

Boundaries and rules
Warn parents that it may get worse before better when introducing a new management plan - MUST BE CONSISTENT
Star charts?
Decide value beforehand - sticker may be enough
Consider cashing in every x stars for a reward
Put stars on promptly - need to link outcome/reward with behaviour
DO NOT take stars off the chart
Tailor chart to interests of the child
Time outs?
Somewhere neutral - not the child’s bedroom - may be a reward and don’t want them to associated bedroom with punishment.
1 minute per year of child’s age - time starts again if they get up
