Behaviour Change Strategies Flashcards
Our goal is to teach and reinforce appropriate behaviour not just to…
eliminate problem behaviour
Describe a function based intervention.
The type of intervention that seeks to change problem behaviour by changing the environmental variables that cause/maintain the behaviour - often uses results from an FBA.
Describe a non-function based intervention.
The type of intervention that seeks to change challenging behaviour without considering the environmental variable that evoke/maintain behaviour.
What are the problems associated with using a non-function based intervention?
- Behaviour might get worse
- Behaviour might not change or any change will only be temporary
- The intervention may or may not provide reinforcement for appropriate instances of behaviour
Name the 5 types of intervention strategies.
- Differential Reinforcement
- Non-contingent reinforcement (NCR)
- Manipulating Antecedents
- Extinction
- Punishment
What are the two types of DRL?
- Full session DRL
2. Spaced responding
What is non-contingent reinforcement?
A procedure in which reinforcement is delivered on a fixed or variable time schedule regardless of the behaviour thats being engaged in.
Why must you use caution when using NCR with high rate behaviours?
- You may end up reinforcing problem behaviour
- You may not have the time to provide all that continuous reinforcement
What are the three antecedent strategies for changing behaviour?
- Curricular revision/task adjustment
- Providing choices
- High probability command sequencing/behavioural momentum
What must you consider when using extinction?
Whether you have control over the reinforcer
What are the other names for contingency contracting?
- Behavioural contract
- Contingency management
