Behaviour change model Flashcards
List the stages in the behaviour change model
- Precontemplation
(not ready) - Contemplation
(getting ready) - Preparation
(ready) - Maintenance
(Sticking to it) - Relapse
(Learning)
List the role of the practitioner in the:
precontemplation stage
Here, the patient has not thought about making changes.
The practitioners role is to raise awareness for the need for change, and helps the patient voice any concerns
List the role of the practitioner in the:
contemplation stage
Here, the patient is thinking about making changes. The practitioner should:
- weigh up pros and cons of change
- suggest alternatives to the cons
- help the patient believe in their ability to change
List the role of the practitioner in the:
preparation stage
Here, the patient is ready to make change. The practitioner should identify ways/ set goals for the patient to be able to implement changes
List the role of the practitioner in the:
maintenance stage
The practitioner and patient should identify ways to keep the changes in place and prevent relapse
List the role of the practitioner in the:
relapse stage
The practitioner should help the patient deal with the consequences of relapse and identify what they want to do next
Recognise the importance of motivational interviewing
- MI is about collaborating with the patient. The practitioner acknowledges the patient’s expertise about themselves
- It enables the practitioner to help the patient activate their own motivation by informing them reasons for change in a personalised approach
- It recognises that although the patient informs and advises their patient, they acknowledge that the patient has the right and freedom to not change
List the various homecare therapeutic agents
Toothpaste
Mouthwash
Tooth mouse
Anti-bacterials
Therapeutic chewing gums
Diet measures
Describe toothpastes in caries prevention and periodontal disease
- Stannous fluoride is antibacterial
- Pyrophosphates reduce supra- gingival calculus
- Triclosan is antibacterial reduces gingivitis MS and LB
- NeutroFluor5000 Plus arrests enamel, dentine and root lesions
Describe mouthwashes in caries prevention
• Savacol is antibacterial, contains CHx. Do not use within 2 hours if sodium lauryl sulphate is in the toothpaste (this can inactive the CHx and the fluoride uptake for teeth from the toothpaste)
Describe toothmouse in caries prevention
Increases calcium and phosphate for enamel uptake
