Q

What are mainframes?

A

Mainframes are expensive, powerful computers that offer large processing and storage capacities which is less than a super computer but more than a typical desktop. Mainframes allow thousands of users simultaneously

Q

What is direct access?

A

Direct access allows us to find and store data by going directly to the source of the data rather than going through all the data

Q

What is magnetic tape?

A

Magnetic tape is a real of plastic tape that is coated in metal oxide that allows data to be written and read using magnetized and magnetized spots, which is then converted to 1s and 0s

16
Q

What are the 4 different types of mouses

A

Optical mouse
Track ball mouse
Pointing stick mouse
Touchpad

17
Q

What are graphics tablets?

A

A physical board that detects the position of a pointing device such as a stylus on a surface

18
Q

What are touch screens?

A

Touch screens allow the users to interact with the surface via touching a pressure sensitive screen with their finger

19
Q

What are the two gaming input devices?

A

Joysticks : lever built on a base that gives a 360 degree motion and contains buttons to execute commands

Gaming pads : allows the user to move objects on the screen by using a combination of directional parts and joysticks along with buttons to execute commands

20
Q

What is a scanning device?

A

A scanning devices takes a physical item and finds a way to format it digitally, reducing human input

21
Q

What is an OMR (optical mark reader) ?

A

This allows the system to read Mark’s on paper on pre-formatted paper which is input directly into the computer system

22
Q

What is the OCR (optical character recognition) ?

A

This scanning device scans physically written words on paper and converted it into a digital text representation that can be manipulated using software in a computer system.

23
Q

What is the MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) ?

A

This is a scanning device used in banks to validate cheques. The cheque is printed using a special magnetic ink that helps verify the authenticity of the cheque.

24
Q

What are barcode readers?

A

A barcode is a set of vertical lines that have varying thickness which represent a strung of numbers. The string of numbers is also available at the base of the barcode. A barcode reader uses a laser across the barcode which reflects light and converts eash bar and thickness to a number.

25
Q

What are POS systems?

A

Pos systems utilise a barcode reader and a server which has a database built into it. When an item is scanned at a POS, it is translated into a string of numbers. This string of numbers is then compared in the database which when it is matches gives the name, brand and price

26
Q

What are QR codes?

A

A QR code means quick response code and is similar to a barcode since it holds information. QR codes can be read by cameras today especially on cell phones. QR codes can be read horizontally and vertically therefore it holds more information than a bar code.
