Knowing, Planning, Preparing
Knowing
is your place prone to any of the earthquake hazards such as
liquefaction, ground rupture, tsunami or landslide?
Planning
Adhere to proper structural design
and engineering practices when
constructing house or buildings.
Preparing
Prepare your work place, home, or school for an earthquake by strapping heavy furniture or cabinet to the wall, storing breakable items, harmful chemical and flammable items in the lowermost shelves and firmly secured
Steps in Preparing
- Identify areas that can be used as refuge
- Prepare and Maintain an earthquake survival kit
- Familiarize yourself with exit points and shortest way out
Six reminders during an earthquake
- Stay Calm
- Stay Indoors
- Stay away from windows and mirrors
- Stay away from doorways
- Drop, Cover, and Hold on
- Listen to Adults
The first thing to remember is to stay calm. It can be scary, but staying calm will help you think clearly and make the right decisions.
Stay Calm
If you are indoors when an
earthquake occurs, stay inside. Avoid running outside as there may be falling debris or other dangers
Stay Indoors
Move away from windows, glass, and mirrors to avoid the risk of shattering and causing injuries
Stay away from windows and mirrors
Contrary to popular belief,
doorways are not necessarily the safest place to be during an earthquake. Instead, find a
sturdy piece of furniture to take cover under
Stay away from doorways
When you feel the shaking,
remember to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Drop down to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture like a table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops. This will protect you from falling objects and help prevent injuries.
Drop, cover, and hold on
Follow the instructions of adults or teachers who are present. They will guide you on what to do and keep you safe.
Listen to adults
After the earthquake reminders
- After the shaking stops
- Know your emergency plan
What to do after shaking stop
- Be cautious
- Check yourself and others for injuries
- If it is safe to do so, exit the building
- Gather in an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines
