What does the umbilical cord do?
The umbilical cord transfers nutrients, oxygen to the foetus and takes waste from the foetus.
What is the gestation period?
The gestation period is from fertilisation until birth.
Once an embryo has developed a full set of organs, what is it called?
A foetus.
How long does the average foetus take to develop a full set of organs?
8 weeks.
When a baby is ready to be born, the uterus begins to what?
Contract (squeeze).
What happens when a woman’s “water” breaks?
The amnion breaks and amniotic fluid flows out of the vagina.
What happens in a contraction?
The muscles of the cervix relax slowly, making it wider.
The contractions are small and gentle at first but they gradually get bigger and more painful.
