The process by which individuals internalize the norms, values and cultural practices of their society or group
Socialization (Sociological Concept)
This theory emphasizes that people occupy various roles with society, such as parent, student, employee, etc. These roles come with expectations, norms and behaviors
Role Theory (Sociological Concept)
This theory explores how people categorize themselves into different social groups, such as nationality, ethnicity, gender, etc.
Social Identity Theory (Sociological Concept)
The desire to fit in and be accepted (adjusting one’s behavior to fit in)
Conformity (Sociological Concept)
While society and groups exert a strong influence, individuals also possess agency-the ability to make independent choices and decisions
Agency and Self-Determination (Sociological Concept)
A process distinct from socialization which refers to the process of cultural learning with a specific culture
Enculturation
Refers to behaviors, actions or attitudes that go against the accepted norms of a society or group (ex. cheating during exams)
