MAIN ENGINE HIGH WATER TEMP (RAW WATER)

SYMPTOM

EDM alarm sounds and flashes “Coolant Temp High”

A
  • Check overboard discharge
  • Look through ER window and report temp on gauge
  • Check bilges
  • Check R/W pipes
  • Check sea suction valves
  • Check and shift strainers
  • Ensure deicing system is isolated
  • Check raw water pump

Q

MAIN ENGINE HIGH WATER TEMP (JACKET WATER)

SYMPTOM

EDM alarm sounds and flashes “Coolant Temp High”

A
  • check J/W level
  • inspect J/W pump
  • Check L/O for qaunity and quality

Secure engine when:

  • Leaks are found
  • J/W pump inoperative
  • Temp continues to climb

Q

Loss of MDE L/O Pressure

  • Symptom:

EDM alarm sounds and flashes “Oil Pressure Low”

A
  • secure in engine with casualty
  • Observe casualty through port hole to determine safety
  • Check bilges
  • Look for obvious leaks
  • check L/O for qaunity and quality
  • check recovery bottle for contamination

Q

Loss of F/O Pressure

Symptom:

Engine begins to run rough and there is a loss of power. EDM alarm sounds and flashes “Fuel Pressure Low”.

A
  • Secure engine with casualty
  • Check status through port hole to determine safety and observe bilge for F/O
  • Check emergency cutout valves
  • Check primary fuel filter
  • Check entire fuel system for leaks

Corrective actions

  • Replace primary fuel filter if suspect
  • Re-prime system
  • Start engine and check for proper operation

Q

Loss of Engine RPM Control

Symptom:

Engine RPM cannot be controlled

A
  • Pull emergency fuel cut-off to affected engine
  • Secure affected engines’s DDEC breaker on the 24 volt panel
  • If engine still does not secure, pull emergency air shutdown

Q

Loss of Steering (Hydraulics)

Symptom:

  • Wheel turns in either direction with no rudder response and the low steering pressure alarm light is illuminated and audible alarm is sounding.
A
  • Look through port hole for safety
  • Check the hydraulic fluid is no less than half full
  • Check that pre-discharge pressure is between 20-30 psi
  • Inspect entire system for leaks or kinks

Q

Loss of Steering (Electrical)

Symptom:

  • Jog lever has no rudder response/is not operating correctly or auto pilot is not responding correctly
A
  • Look through Port holr for safety
  • Check sight glass and pressure gauge on reservoir, if no oil or pressure secure engines
  • Check electrical connections at electro-hydraulic steering valve
  • Check power servo cylinder
  • Check steering ram connections
  • Check auto pilot and rudder angle indicator mechanical and electrical connections
  • Check steering system breakers on the 12v panel
  • Secure steering control breaker if faulty jog lever interferes with helm
  • Secure auto pilot if interfereing with helm

Q

Reduction Gear Failure

Symptom:

  • Boat does not respond when throttle are operated in forward and reverse
A
  • Check EGIM breakers on 24V panel
  • Check reduction gear bilge for for oil
  • Check reduction gear L/O level
  • Check reduction gear control valve connections
  • Check dirty oil filter indicator on duplex filter and shift handle if indicator popped up
  • If no L/O leaks are present and level is full, restart the engine and check clutch applied pressure is 230-290 psi. If pressure is not sufficient, secure engine

Low Voltage Alarm/Loss of Electrical Charging System

Symptom:

EDM displays low voltage alarm and/or a drop in voltage is indicated by dimming lights, electronics dropping offline and/or DDEC station control is deactivated.

A
  • Check position of battery isolator switches
  • Check alternator reset switches
  • Check alternator belts and electrical connections
  • Check electrical connections on L/O pressure switches
  • Check all main battery connections
  • Secure all non vital equipment

Fire in the Engine Room

Symptom:

Fire alarm sounds

A
  • Check status of E/R through port hole
  • Notify coxswain of E/R status
  • If fire, pull emergency fuel cut-out valves
  • energize C02 system
  • Secure electrical breakers on DC panel with exception of main breaker and VHF-FM Radio
