Q

What can you tell us about Chateau Thivin?

A

Summary: Chateau Thivin is commonly considered the benchmark of the Côte de Brouilly; it is also the oldest estate on Mont Brouilly, purchased by Zaccharie Geoffray in 1877.

Zaccharie’s grandson Claude helped in the creation of the Côte de Brouilly appellation in 1938.

The domaine has been passed down through six generations with a gradual expansion of vineyard holdings through multiple purchases. Today the estate is managed by Claude Geoffray, his wife Evelyne and their son Claude-Edouard.

Q

What is the style of Chateau Thivin?

A

Brief Description of Style / Vinification Techniques:
Grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September, and all parcels undergo separate vinification. After partial de-stemming, the fruit undergoes traditional, whole-cluster fermentation and is then gravity-fed into steel tanks.

The Brouilly is raised in tank before bottling, while Côte de Brouilly ages in oak foudres for six months,

and “Cuvée Zaccharie” is aged one to five years in 228-liter oak barrels (average 10% new oak).

8
Q

Where was Coudert located?

A

Summary: Roilette was historically associated with the area of Moulin-à-Vent… until 1936, when the official Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent AOPs were created, and the estate was marked within the Fleurie AOP.

Losing the Moulin-à-Vent designation upset the then-owner so much that he chose to label his wines without mention of Fleurie, displaying only a picture of his racehorse on the label—

an icon that’s persevered on the label to this day, even under new ownership by Fernand Coudert and his son Alain.

Q

What are the soils of Coudert?

A

The Couderts purchased the property in 1967, and they replanted several of the untended vineyards. Unlike the majority of Fleurie’s granite soils, Clos de la Roilette shares Moulin-à-Vent’s manganese soils with a large portion of clay.

Q

Style of Coudert?

A

Brief Description of Style / Vinification Techniques:

Alain took over from his father as winemaker in 1991 and continues Fernand’s traditional approach to winegrowing and winemaking: lutte raisonnée vineyard practices, traditional semi-carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts and aging in large, open foudres.

17
Q

What does Domaine des Terres Dorées do differently when it comes to winemaking?

A

Today, Jean-Paul Brun is recognized for making Beaujolais in a less traditional and more Burgundian fashion, having decided early on that Beaujolais’ traditional whole-cluster, semi-carbonic fermentation wasn’t appropriate for the wines he wanted to make. He also staunchly believes in using only his vineyard’s wild yeast for fermentation, rather than synthetic forms.

A

Summary: The Château des Jacques estate, located in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, was purchased by Louis Jadot in 1996.

Jadot continued vineyard expansion in 2001 with the purchase of a vineyard in Morgon.

Both vineyards were regrouped under Château des Jacques Estates in 2008.

Winemaker and director Guillaume de Castelnau applies Burgundian winemaking methods, including long barrel aging following fermentation.
