BC2, Module 1.2: Foundations Of Safe Construction Flashcards
What is OHS legislation?
It is a collection of laws established to ensure the protection of the health and safety of individuals in and around the workplace.
How does the OHS legislation achieve its purpose?
Through a combination of regulations, guidelines and standards that outline safe work practices, employer and employee responsibilities and the necessary compliance measures.
What is a workers responsibility in complying with the OHS legislation?
- Understand the safety requirements and procedures for my specific role.
- Use the provided PPE at all times on site
- Report any hazards, near misses, or incidents to your supervisor promptly.
- Participate in safety training and follow the guidance given by the OHS presonnel.
What are some common hazards
- Falls from heights: occur when working on scaffolding, ladders or rooftops
- Electric hazards: Exposed wires or faulty equipment
- Moving machinery: cranes, forklifts and other heavy equipment pose risks if not operated safely.
- Slips, trips, and falls: Uneven surfaces, spills and debris can cause injury
What is risk management?
It is the process of (1) identifying potential hazards, (2) assessing their level of risk and (3) implementing control measures to eliminate or minimize the hazard.
What is the role of communication in OHS?
On a construction site, clear, concise and timely communication can (1) prevent accidents and (2) ensure compliance with safety regulation and (3) save lives
What is OHS communication?
The sharing of safety related information between workers, supervisors and OHS personnel.
The channels of OHS communication?
- verbal
- written
- visual aids eg. Signs
3 common forms of OHS communication
- Toolbox talks: regular meetings where workers and supervisors discuss safety topics relevant to the days tasks.
- Safety briefings: These cover specific hazards and safety measures for particular jobs or projects.
- Incident reporting: communicate any accidents, near missess or unsafe conditions to the relevant authorities.
Types of safety signs
- Warning signs: they serve to warn you of potential hazards within an area
- Mandatory signs: they tell u what u must do
- Prohibition: they tell you what u are not allowed to do
- Emergency: they direct you to emergency fire exits, first aid stations, and extinguishers.
The roles of the OHS personnel
- conduct safety training
- inspect the site for hazards
- investigating accidents
Note: workers should know who their OHS personnel are and how to contact them.
What do you include when making a report?
- what happened
- where it happened
- when it happened
- who was involved
What are the general emergency procedures?
- Assess the situation: stay calm and evaluate the natiof the emergency. identify any immediate dangers to yourself and others.
- Alert others: Notify your coworkers and supervisors about the situation. Use alarms or communication systems to ensure everyone is aware.
- Follow emergency plan: Each construction site should have an emergency response plan. Follow the instructions, which may include (1) evacuating to a safe area or (2) taking specific actions like shutting off equipment.
- Cobtact emergency services: if necessary, call the appropriate emergency services to handle the situation, such as fire, medical or police departments.
Accessing first aid: need to know
- The location of the first aid kit: every construction site is required to have accessible first aid kits. Familiarise urself with their locations.
- understand first aid basic procedures. These include treating cuts, burns, and fractures as well as performing cpr if someone is not breathing.
- contact first aid personnel: many sites have a designated first aid officer. Notify them immediately if an injury occurs.
PPE: need to know
- Types of PPE: Hard hats, gloves, safety boots, goggles, ear protection and high visibility vests.
- Using PPE correctly: Ensure that PPE fits and is suitable for the task
- Maintaining PPE: Regularly inspect your PPE for damage and replace it when necessary.
3 fire safety basics:
- fire extinguishers: understand the types lf extinguishers on site and how to use them
- Evacuation routes: Familiarise urself with the designated (1) evacuation routes and (2) assembly points.
- Preventing Fires: Ensure that flammable materials are stored safely and that electrical equipment is properly maintained.
