Context before the Battle of Towton

A
  • Parliament declared Edward IV the King of England, claiming Henry VI was the usurper.
  • Lancastrian forces retreated up north from London, followed by Yorkist forces lead by Warwick chasing the Lancastrian army.

What happened after the battle of Towton

A

Yorkist win decisively

King and Margaret and her son fled to Scotland

Warwick stayed in the North in case Scotland wished to take advantage of the situation in England

Edward IV returned to London to be coronated.

Significance of the Battle of Towton

A

Was viewed that Edward needed to go to battle and if he wins than god wants him to be king, if he loses he wasn’t the chosen one.

Also his thrown was not secure as there was a very large Lancastrian threat in the North.
