What was the plan?
British and French artillery would destroy the German barbed wire and trenches, aeroplanes would check the German defences had been destroyed, soldiers and tanks would easily pass the cut barbed wire on no man’s land , the British and French soldiers would capture the German trenches and break the stalemate.
What actually happened?
The British had very little French help due to the French being stuck at another battle, the Germans saw the British preparing a path and cutting barbed wire weeks before the attack, most of the artillery shells fired at the German defences did not explode because they were faulty, the British got stuck on the barbed wire after the wire didn’t get cut through, planes couldn’t see if the German defences had been destroyed.
