When is impact weapon justified?
When an officers attempts at empty hand control are ineffective but deadly force isn’t justified
Where should baton strikes be aimed?
Limbs and large muscle groups; away from head and neck
What are medical implications of baton strikes?
Strikes to lower forearm cause contusions and broken radius/ulna bones; strikes to thigh cause contusions to skin and muscles; possible fractured fibula/tibia
Parts of an expandable baton
Tip, end shaft, mid shaft, handle, end cap
Proper grip
All fingers on handle with thumb contacting index finger
Low ready stance with baton
Placed at officers gun side leg and go to low ready stance
High ready stance with baton
Load the baton to dominate shoulder with dominant elbow pointing down
