Basics of positioning: Ossification Flashcards
What ossification process are flat bones created from?
intramembranous ossification
What ossification process are short, long, and irregular bones created by?
endochondral ossification
When does primary ossification occur and what happens during this period of ossification?
it happens before birth and during this time the long central shafts of the bone begin to
Primary ossification of a bone
Primary ossification begins before birth and forms long central shaft in long bones
Secondary ossification of a bone
Secondary ossification occurs after birth when separate bones begin to develop at both ends of long bones
What are the ends of a bone called? (they appear after secondary ossification)
epiphyses
What are the characteristics of a long bone?
found only in limbs
consist of body and two enlarged articular ends
examples: Femur, humerus, phalanges
What are the characteristics of a short bone?
consist mainly of cancellous bone with a thin outer layer of compact bone
Examples: carpal and tarsal bones
What are the characteristics of flat bones?
consist of two plates of compact bone
middle layer of cancellous bone called diploe
examples: sternum, cranium, and scapula
What are the characteristics of an irregular bone?
they are peculiarly shaped
examples: vertebrae, pelvic bones, and facial bones
What are the characteristics of a sesamoid bone?
very small and oval
develop inside and beside tendons
protect the tendon from excessive wear
