Basics of Design Flashcards
What are the three planes?
- Horizontal Plane - The floor or ground
- Vertical Plane - the Walls, trees, hedges, trellises, etc.
- Overhead plane - Ceiling, Canopy, String Lights, Sky
What are transitional spaces and how are they used?
Transitional spaces link different areas together. They are used to direct the flow of movement around the site.
What are the five basic elements of landscape design?
- Line
- Form
- Texture
- Color
- Visual Weight
What are the qualities of a line in landscape design?
Lines are the edge between any two materials. They define spaces. They can be in any plane. They guide the movement of the eye.
What are the qualities of form in landscape design?
Forms are the 3d mass of objects in the landscape. The negative space between objects is also form. Form can be geometric or natural/organic.
What are the qualities of texture in landscape design?
Texture can be coarse (chunky, large), medium, or fine (small, delicate). Everything has texture, especially plants. Coarse textures will dominate perception, while fine textures fade into the background.
What are the qualities of color in landscape design?
Color affects mood, brightness, and perceived size. Landscape designs have color palettes like in painting, such as monochromatic, analogous, complementary, etc. White shows up best in the evening or at night; hot colors make a space seem smaller; cool colors make a space seem larger.
What are the qualities of visual weight in landscape design?
Visual weight is the presence of a given feature in the scene. Features with high visual weight command our attention while features with low visual weight fade into the background.
What qualities give an object high visual weight? Low visual weight?
High visual weight can be achieved with high mass, coarse texture, warm color, and an upright shape.
Low visual weight can be achieved with low mass, fine texture, cool color, and a low-lying shape.
