What is the function of the sub-cutaneous tissue?
Store fat, insulation, fibrous bands anchor skin to fascia
What is the dermis?
A collagen and elastin matrix with mucopolysaccharide gel, fibroblasts, dermal dendritic cells and macrophages
What is the epidermis?
The outer layer of skin
What are melanocytes?
Make melanosomes which are excreted and phagocytosed into keratinocytes where they sit above the nucleus
What are langerhans cells?
They process antigens and migrate to lymph nodes to induce an immune response
Describe the anagen phase of the hair cycle?
Active hair growing phase, 80-90% of hair is generated
Describe the catagen phase of the hair cycle?
2-3 weeks phase. growth stops and follicle shrinks. Generates 1-3% of hairs
describe the telogen phase?
The resting phase for 1-4 months. Results to 10% of hairs in a normal scalp
What is the function of skin?
Thermoregulation, Skin immune system, Barrier, sensation, vitamin D synthesis
What are the external causes of skin disease?
Temperature, UV, chemical, infection, trauma
What are the internal causes of skin disease?
Systemic disease, genetics, drugs, infection
What is a macule?
Small circumscribed area
What is a patch?
Larger circumscribed area
What is a papule?
Small raised area
What is a plaque?
Larger raised area
