What is the integrative approach?
The integrative approach does not rely on asking too many questions - ( true when dealing with emotional rather than behavioural issues)
What are the problems with asking too many questions?
Being intrusive Interrogating Unnecessary inequality Inappropriate use of why questions controlling what is explored satisfying the counsellors needs
Closed questions
lead to a specific answer - yes/no etc - narrow conversation
Do you like your work?
Open questions
give a lot of scope to explore
What is your work like?
What are the dangers in asking too many questions
the client might
- deflect from the important issue
- stop exploring and wait for the next question
- might withdraw from interrogation
Closed questions may
- lead to a specific answer
- confine the person to a limited response
- help the person to be more precise
- are useful in eliciting specific information
Open questions may
share new information
speak freely and openly
bring out those things that are of most importance
Summarising focuses on
the main points
Summarising shows that the counselor is
listening and understanding
Summarising needs to be done
from time to time throughout a session, and is useful towards the end to bring a session to a close.
Summarising key points include
pick out the salient points
draws the points together
reflected back in a clear and precise way
