Basics Of Biology Flashcards
Biology
Is the science of studying living organisms
Ehat does biology examine
the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution,
distribution, and classification of all living things.
Characteristics of all living things
movement
Respiration
sensitivity
growth
reproduction
excretion
nutrition
Movement (characteristics of living things)
The ability of organisms to move
respiration (Characteristics of all living things)
set of chemical reactions that take place in our cells to break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism (all the chemical processes that occur within an organism to keep it alive)
sensitivity (Characteristics of all living things)
the ability to detect and respond to changes in the internal
and external enviourment
EG. change in
tempature → respond by sweating or shivering
growth (Characteristics of all living things)
Organisms can grow
Reproduction (Characteristics of all living things)
The process that makes more pf the same kind of organism
Excretion
the removal of the waste products of metabolism
(getting rid of waste produets, ex, urea CO2) and
substances
in exess of requirements (getting rid of things we sometime need, but only when we have more than we need, (ex
water, mineral ions)
Nutrition
Taking in of materaials for growth and development (animals: eating drinking, fungi pr bacteria: diffusion, active transport)
What are viruses not
Living organisms
Eukaryotes
DNA in the form of chromosomes and DNA found in a nucleus
Examples pf eukaryotes
Animals
Plants
Fungi
Protoctists
Prokaryotes
Dont have a nucleus
Example of prokaryotes
Bacteria
Characteristics of animals
Are multicellular, heterotrophs and most reproduce sexually
Multicellular
Each individual organism is made up from loads of cells
Heterotrophs
Animals get their energy from other other organisms
Characteristics of plants
Are multicellular and are autotrophs
Autotrophs
Get their energy from the sun through photosynthesis
Characteristics of fungi
Some fungi (ex. Molds, mushrooms) are multicellular but other fungi (ex.yeast) are unicellular. Fungi cant photosynthesis.
bacteria
Are single-celled organisms. Many bacteria are helpful because they help in digestion.
Characteristics of protoctiscs
Nearly all are unicellular
Ehat are viruses
Super tiny particles(dont count as cells) and can oly reproduce insode living cells (parasites)
What are cells
The basic building blocks of life
What are tye three main branches of biology
Zoology (study of animals), microbiology (study of microscopic organisms), and botany (study of planst)
