Basic Principles Of Biology Flashcards
Cell theory
Basic unit of life (all living organisms are composed of cells)
Gene Theory:
traits are inherited through gene
transmission. Genes are located on chromosomes and
consist of DNA.
Evolution:
any genetic change in a population that is
inherited over several generations. (Noticeable or not
noticeable)
Homeostasis:
ability to maintain a constant internal
environment in response to environmental changes.
- the cells function best when they are in balance
- the body regulates the levels of things like témperature and acidity
Thermodynamics:
Energy cannot be created or destroyed,
only transferred and transformed. Cells absorb energy and
convert it into different forms.
37°C is the perfect temperature for out enzymes to function
• receptors like our skin send signals to the brain through the nervous system and our effectors preform the action the bfain send back (ex. Shivering to preserve heat)
DNA
Is the chemical that all of our genetic material is made of
Gene
A small section of DNA that codes for protein
Genome
Is an entire set of genetic material in an organism
Chromosomes
Are made of dna
What are the three main principles of cell theory
These principles are: cells are the basic unit of life, all living things are made up of cells, and all cells come from other cells.
