Anthropology
a discipline that studies humans, focusing on the study of differences and similarities, both biological and cultural, in human population
What are the subfields of anthropology?
Biological, cultural, applied, archaeology, ethnology/linguistics
Biological
the study of humans as biological organisms, dealing with the emergence and evolution of humans and with contemporary biological variations among human populations
Cultural
the study of cultural variation and universals in the past and present
Archaeology
the branch that seeks to reconstruct the daily life and customs of people who lived in the past and to trace and explain cultural changes
Linguistics
the anthropological study of language
Ethnology
the study of how and why recent cultures differ and are similar
Culture
the set of learned behaviors and ideas (including beliefs, attitudes, values and ideals) that are characteristic of a particular society or group
Characters/transmitting of culture
culture is shared, culture is learned, adaptive, constructs meanings, integrated, shared/variable
Cultural relativism
the attitude that a society’s values, customs and ideas should be viewed within the context of that society’s problems and opportunities
Ethnocentrism
the attitude that other societies and ideas can be judged in the context of one’s own culture
