the branch of anthropology that concerns itself with applying anthropological knowledge to achieve practical goals, usually in the service of an agency outside the traditional academic setting
What career fields do we find anthropologists in?
social work, business, advertising, medicine, education, national and international development, urban social issues
What are the 3 “views” of applied anthropology?
ivory tower, prime directive, advocate
Ivory tower
contends that anthropologists should avoid practical matters and focus on research, publication and teaching
Prime directive
view is that anthropologists should carry out research, but not make or criticize policy
Advocate
argues that since anthropologists are experts on human problems and social change, they should make policy affecting people

What are some of the ethical responsibilities of an applied anthropologist?
Protect and respect the safety, dignity, and privacy of the people, materials or remains being studied, obtain informed consent from those being studied.
Gangster anthropologist
anthropologist that is brought into a gangster/gang situation
