Basics Flashcards
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules across a cell membrane from a region of their lower concentration to a region of their higher concentration in the direction against some gradient. Requires ATP.
What is osmosis?
A liquid, usually water, passes through a semipermeable membrane to a region of higher concentration.
What is a sister chromatid?
A sister chromatid refers to either of the two identical copies formed by the replication of a single chromosome, with both copies joined together by a centromere. A sister chromatid may also be said as ‘one-half’ of the duplicated chromosome.
What is facilitated diffusion?
Facilitated diffusion is passive transport that uses integral membrane proteins to help larger, charged, hydrophilic, and polar molecules across a concentration gradient.
What sort of bond do DNA molecules use?
Hydrogen bonds.
What does a DNA molecule consist of?
A, T, C or G base attached to a sugar molecule and a phosphate molecule. These form a nucleotide.
