Basics Flashcards
All living organisms are composed of cells regardless of their classification and level of complexity. Some organisms are unicellular such as bacteria and protozoa and some are multicellular organisms such as fungi, worms, and mammals (including human).
Living cells are further divided into two classes according to their size, structure, and complexity of their organelles.
What are these two classes?
- Prokaryotes (including Bacteria
and Archaea) - Eukaryotes (which include all other living organisms
Pathogenic microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and parasitic worms) can be what two functions?
Pathogenic microbes are either strict parasitic or opportunistic commensals.
Opportunistic commensals take advantage of a weaker immune system to change the balance of the
relationship with the host gaining access to new areas of the body causing harm or
disease
