Basic Ultrasound Imaging Flashcards
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 1
Signs/Symptoms that may be referred from the abdominal and retroperitoneal region (ex. juandice)
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 2
Generalized abdominal, flank or back pain
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 3
palpable mass/enlarged organ
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 4
abnormal labs or abnormal findings on other imaging modalities
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 5
Follow up of known or suspected abnormailities
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 6
Search for metastatic disease
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 7
evaluation of suspected congenital abnormalities
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 8
trauma to the abdomen
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 9`
Pre or post-transplant evaluation
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 10
Invasive procedure
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 11
localization of free or loculated peritoneal, pleural or retroperitoneal fluid
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 12
suspicion of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis or intersusspection
Indication for abdominal ultrasound 13
Evaluation of UTI
Anechoic
Opposite of echogenic, without internal echoes
Echogenic/hyperechoic
opposite of anechoic, echo producing structure
Enhancement
Sound that travels through an anechoic substance and is not attenuated
Fluid-Fluid level
interface between two fluids with different acoustic characteristics; level will change with different patient position
Heterogeneous
not uniform in texture
homogenous
opposite of heterogeneous, completely uniform
hypoechoic
low-level echoes within a structure
Infiltrating
diffuse disease process or metastatic disease
Irrgeular borders
borders are not well defined
Isoechoic
Very close to the normal parenchyma cheogencity pattern
Loculated mass
well-defined borders with internal echoes; septa is thin
Shadowing
sound beam is attenuated by a solid or calcified object
