What is Media Language?
The means by which the media communicates with its audience. This includes codes and conventions.
What are Technical Codes?
The way in which software and hardware are used to produce meaning; this includes mise-en-scene, sound, camera and editing.
What are Symbolic Codes?
Symbolic codes show what is beneath the surface of what we see; they are the codes used to create deeper meaning.
What are Verbal Codes?
Written or spoken codes; codes that use words.
What are Non-Verbal Codes?
Codes that do not use words i.e. images/sounds/facial expressions etc.
What are Conventions?
The common features of a form or genre; the expected elements of a product.
What are Semiotics?
The study of signs and symbols. The three main schools of thought used in GCSE media are that of Saussure, Barthes and Peirce.
What is Anchorage?
Media language that is used to reinforce the meaning of another set of codes i.e. a caption reinforcing what is in an image.
What is the Call to Action?
When an audience is directed to do something by the media text.
What is Mise-en-Scene?
The stage design and arrangement of scenery, stage properties and actors in a theatre or film production.
What is Cinematography?
The art and process of movie photography. An example is the decisions made about lighting, camera filters and lenses when shooting a scene.
