What does NEWS stand for?
National early warning score
What 7 things does NEWS include?
Heart rate Respiratory rate Systolic blood pressure Temperature Level of consciousness Supplemental O2 Oxygen Saturations
What score is equivalent to low medium and high clinical risk?
1-4 is low
5-6 is medium
7 plus is high
What two things might you need to consider with NEWS?
Respiratory conditions e.g COPD (use the type 2 for these patients)
Drugs being used for treatment e.g. morphine will cause much more drowsiness and reduce alertness
What are some symptoms of low blood pressure?
Fainting
Loss of colour
Loss of vision (black spots etc)
Dizziness
What are some symptoms for high blood pressure?
Red face
Headaches
Nose bleed
Increased heart rate
What is the difference between essential and secondary high blood pressure?
Essential is lifestyle led
Secondary is caused by medical condition
