Explain what the daily value is on the nutrient fact label and its intended use.
o Based on a 2000-kcal diet (at the bottom of the label are the DV for a 2500 kcal diet)
o A reference point to provide a guide to daily nutrient need.
o The DV for Vitamins A and D, calcium and iron are based on the reference daily intake (RDI)

USDA organic
• USDA Organic or Certified Organic seal on food means:
o that it has the ingredients listed and the contents are 95% or more certified organic.
o they are free of synthetic additives like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes and
o must not be processed using industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering.
o The remaining 5% may only be foods or processed with additives on an approved list.
o 100% organic means all of the ingredients must meet the guidelines above
o Made with organic mean the ingredients must contain 70% or more organic ingredients, the USDA seal cannot be used and the remaining 30% of ingredients cannot be foods or processed with additives on an exclusion list.
