What is a mnemonic to remember the order of sharps ♯ ?
- F- ♯[Father]
- C ♯[Christmas]
- G ♯ [Gave]
- D ♯ [Dad]
- A ♯ [An]
- E ♯[Electric]
- B ♯[Blanket]
How can you find the key signature of a major key, with sharps ?
- to find the key signature of a major key with sharps, the last sharp is the leading note [the note below the key note].
- For example, A major- the leading note is G ♯, therefore the sharps are: F ♯, C ♯ and G ♯.
What is a mnemonic to remember the order of flats ♭ ?
- B-♭[Blanket]
- E-♭[Exploded]
- A- ♭ [And]
- D ♭ [Dad]
- G ♭[Got]
- C ♭[Cold]
- F ♭ [Feet]
How can you find the key signature of a major key with flats ?
- to find the key signature of a major key with flats, the last one [but last flat,] is the key note.
- For example, A ♭- next flat is D ♭, so the flats are B ♭, E ♭, A ♭ and D ♭.
How can intervals be worked out ?
- intervals can be worked out, by using your key signatures. In a major key, the sequence of intervals from the key note is:
- unison
- major 2nd
- major 3rd
- perfect 4th
- perfect 5th
- perfect 6th
- major 7th
What is the rule for working out intervals
- look at the bottom note, take the key signatures of that note in that scale, the interval is above and if smaller, either minor [2nd, 3rd, 6th or 7th] or diminished octave [4th, 5th octave]
- If a 4th, 5th or octave is a semitone larger, it’s augmented.
What is the rule for finding out minor key signatures ?
- to find a relative minor [same key signature], go down 3 semitones [this must be 3 note names].
- ; to find minor key signatures in general, same note name, go down 3 places to find the minor key- [e.g- a major 3 ♯, a minor 0 sharps or flats, f major 1 ♭and f minor 4 ♭]
What is a clef ?
- a clef [🎼 or 𝄢] is a symbol at the start of a line, that tells you how high or low to play the notes.
What is a note ?
- each note, is shown by a separate oval: ♩, and the symbol tells you how long or short the note is.

- or on separate short lines, above or below.
What are triplets ?
-
What does the time signature do ?
- the time signature, tells you about the beats in a bar.
What can you tell me about beats ?
- each bar has the same number of beats.
What can you tell me about pitch ?
- notes higher up the stave, have a higher pitch.
- ; notes lower down the stave, have a lower pitch.
What is a chord ?
- a chord, is made up of more than one note played together.
What is a double bar line ?
- a double bar line occurs at the end of a piece, or at the end of a section [of a piece]
What can you tell me about the white and black keys on a piano 🎹 ?
- the white keys play natural notes.
- the black keys play sharps and flats.
- The C in the middle of the piano, is known as middle C and the white notes from C to C, make the scale of C major.
Briefly explain what tones and semitones are ?

What is a semitone ?
- on a piano, a semitone is the gap between any key, black or white.
- It’s the immediate neighbour.
What is a tone ?

What is the difference 🆚 a semitone and a tone ?
- on a piano, a semitone is the gap between any key, black or white. It’s the immediate neighbour.
- ; a tone, is the gap from an key to a key, that is two semitones above or below.
