Basic Math Concepts Flashcards
Integers
- are whole numbers, not fractions or decimals
- zero is an integer
- includes both positive and negative whole numbers
Converting mixed numbers into fractions
- First, convert whole number into fraction with same denominator as fraction
ex: 3 4/5 —> 3 = 15/5 - Add two fractions with common denominator
ex: 15/5 + 4/5 = 19/5
The Bowtie
- find least common denominator to add/subtract fractions with different denominators
- multiply bottom left # with top right # and vice versa; write products above numerators
- then add or subtract the products according to the problem to find numerator
- last, multiply both denominators to find new denominator
Multiplying fractions
- line them up and multiply straight across
- can also cancel out/reduce numbers before multiplying
Dividing fractions
- flip second fraction over (aka multiply by its reciprocal)
- you can only reduce after flipping second fraction
Comparing fractions by value
- use Bowtie method
- whichever fraction has larger numerator is the larger fraction
How do you find the decimal equivalent of a fraction?
-divide the numerator by the denominator
Adding/subtracting decimals
-line up the decimals, add zeros if necessary
Multiplying decimals
- ignore decimal points until done with multiplication
- after done multiplying, count number of decimal places to the left
Dividing decimals
- need to make sure number you’re dividing by is a whole number
- move decimal places same number of times to both numbers
ex: 1.86 ÷ 0.3 —> 18.6 ÷ 3
Percentages
-to convert fraction into percent, first convert fraction into decimal, then multiply by 100
Percent change formula
difference ÷ original amount

2 pints = ?
