What is an argument
Provides reasons for believing that a proposition is true
What is a valid argument
Conc follows from the premises
Even if premises are false
What is an invalid Argument
Conc doesn’t follow from premises, even if premises are true
Example of a valid, unsound argument
All dogs are reptiles
Bugs Bunny is a dog
- bugs bunny is a reptile

All dogs are mammals
Goofy is a dog
Goofy is a mammal
What is a sound argument
Premises entail the conclusion, premises are true, so conc has to be true
What is a cogent argument
When an argument is sound and persuasive
What is a necessary condition
It is impossible to have Y without X
Having 4 sides is a necessity to be a square
What is a sufficient condition
The presence of X guarantees the presence of Y
Being divisible by 4 is sufficient for being an even number
