Basic Laboratory Equipment Flashcards
What is the formula for calculating RFC?
RFC= krn(squared)
K=1.118x10-5
r=radius (cm)
n=speed of rotation of motor (rpm)
RFC can be increased by and what will cause a greater effect??
Increasing radius or RPM.
RPM will have a greater effect
Where is the maximum RCF attained?
Bottom of the tube
Speed of centrifuge is affected by what?
Size of load and resistance
What can increase resistance in centrifuges?
Air resistance, turbulence and dry/worn bearings
What should you do once a tube breaks in the centrifuges?
Turn off centrifuge and wait 30 mins. Autoclave(heat), cidex rest, bleach outside tubes rinse / dry
What do centrifuges do?
Accelerate gravitational separation of substances.
