Basic Info Flashcards
Anatomy
the structure of the body
Physiology
how the body functions
make up of the body
atoms - molecules - organelles - cells - tissue - organs - systems
cells
basic building blocks of all life; smallest unit capable of physiological functions - sex cells (oocytes/sperm) + somatic cells
tissues
specialized groups of cells combined into organized collections that serve specific functions
organs
tissues combined to form organs, performing specific functions
systems
groups of organs that work together to perform 1+ functions
epithelial tissue
covers exposed body surfaces (ie skin); lines internal passageways (ie digestive tract), chambers, cavities (ie heart); forms glands
connective tissue
provides structural support + fills internal spaces, transport fluids and dissolved materials within body, and stores energy reserves (ie. bone, cartilage, fat, blood)
muscle tissue
shortens as it contracts to perform specific movements, generates heat
neural tissue
carries info from one part of the body to another when stimulated (mostly brain and spinal cord)
