Basic Concepts Of MSK Flashcards
Functions of bone ?
Protection , support, metabolic, storage, movement and haematopoiesis
Functions of skeletal muscle
Locomotion, posture, metabolic, venous return, heat production and continence
Types of connective tissue in MSK
Tendons, Ligament, Fascia, Cartilage, Synovial membrane, Bursa
Function of tendons
Force transmission muscle-bone
Assist in movement
Functions of ligament
Support bone-bone
Stability
Fascia and its functions
Fascia is sheets of connective tissue
Its functions are :
-Compartmentalisation of groups of muscle and body parts
- protection
Functions cartilage
Hyaline : decrease friction
fibrocartilage: shock absorption, increase bony congruity ( increase stability)
Synovial membrane
Secretes synovial fluid for joint and tendon lubrication
Bursa
Synovial fluid filled sacs to protect tendons, ligaments etc from friction
Classifications of bone
Long bone, flat bone, irregular bone, short bone, sesamoid bone
Concepts of joints
- Connect one bone to another
- great variation in range of movement
Classification of joints
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
Concepts of fibrous joints
- essentially collagen fibres
- Very limited mobility
- found where great strength/stability are required
What do ligaments attach
Ligaments attach bone to bone
What do tendons attach
Tendons attach muscle to bone
Role of calcium phosphate in bone
Confers great compressive strength
Role of collagen in bone
Confers great tensile strength
Role of osteoblasts
- synthesis and deposit osteoid
- then deposit calcium phosphate into the osteoid
Role of osteoclasts
- break down bone and uptake minerals in resorption
Nutrient artery
Supplies the bone marrow
Enters near the middle of the diaphysis
Examples of where you can find short bones
Carpal bones in the wrist
Tarsal bones in the ankles
Examples of where you can find long bone
Femur
Humerus
Examples of where you can find irregular bone
Vertebrae
Examples of where you can find sesamoid bones
Embedded in tendons The patella (knee cap)
