Basic Biology Flashcards
what are muscle cells?
these generate forces and produce motion
may be attached to bones to allow limb movement
what are nerve cells?
can initiate and carry electrical impulses to distant areas of the body along their length
what are epithelial cells?
found on surface of body or organs
line hollow structures in the body
compertmentalise areas of the body
what are connective tissue cells?
connect various parts of the body together by anchorage and support
how many organ systems does the body have?
10
what is the circulatory system?
heart, blood vessels, blood
allows rapid bulk flow of blood around body tissues
what is the respiratory system?
nose, throat, larynx, trachea, lungs
exchanges oxygen and CO2
what is the digestive system?
mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, salivary glands, liver, gall bladder
functions to digest, process and absorb nutrients, excrete waste products
what is the urinary system?
kidneys, ureter, bladder, urethra
regulates plasma and excretes waste products
what is the musculo-skeletal system?
cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, joints, skeletal muscle
supports and protects internal organs and allows for movement
what is the immune system?
WBCs, lymph, spleen, bone marrow, thymus gland
functions to defend against infection and produce red and white blood cells
what is the nervous system?
brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory organs
gives consciousness, regulates and coordinates body activities
what is the endocrine system?
all glands secreting hormones
functions to regulate and coordinate body workings
what is the reproductive system?
male/female sex organs
allows reproduction and continuation of the species
what is the integumentary system?
skin
protects against injury, dehydration, maintains temperature
