Q

What is a Dogbox and what is its Radius/Time

A

Dogbox is an area in which a homing torpedo is active. 3000yds lasts 8 minutes

Q

What is the Torpedo Danger Area (TDA)?

A

An area which encompasses and extends beyond a submarine contact, threat datum, furthest on circle or area of uncertainty by a distance equal to the threat submarines Maximum Effective Torpedo Firing Range (METFR). This parameter is used by surface forces to maintain safe stand-off distances during ASW prosecutions and submarine avoidance actions

Q

What is the Torpedo Danger Zone?

A

An area in which the submarine must enter in order to be within METFR. 8000yds Single Ship 10,000yds Convoy/Force

Q

What is “Limited Lines of submerged approach”

A

Mathematically calculated limits related to a force, within an attacking submarine, knowing the course and speed of the force, must be calculated whether a submarine will be a threat to the force then it is possible to estimate these likely courses to achieve the aim.

Q

What does it mean when a sub is “in the grain”?

A

An area between the LLSuA that the submarine is in, Submarine is on the MLA line and so won’t need to move to engage the force

Q

What are the two types of ASW action?

A

Close ASW action: The action in which one or more ASW units attempt to engage enemy submarine within 8,000yds. (TDA)
Stand-off ASW action: The action in which one or more ASW unit attempts to engage an enemy submarine outside of 8,000yds

Q

Types of Contact Classification

A

Nonsub- Characteristics that exclude possibility of sub
PosSub- A contact which available information indicates the likely presence of a submarine, but there is insufficient evidence to justify a higher classification.
Must be amplified by a confidence level and number.
ProbSub- A contact that displays strong cumulative evidence of being a submarine (held on two or more sensors)
CertSub- A contact that has been sighted and positively identified as a submarine

List the Datum Approach Methods

A

Direct- straight for Datum
Offset- coming at datum from different angle
Intercept- intercepting sub on its most dangerous/likely course
Mixed- A mix of both intercept and offset using more than one ship

Q

With aid of a diagram, explain Plan Cordon

A

Most commonly used search and attack plan.
Can be either a Plan Black or Red
Sector Zero- 3000yds
Ships remain outside sector zero unless cleared to enter
8 sectors of 45”, numbered 1-8, no outer limit
Plan orientated on North
Ships are not to manoeuvre within 500yds of sector boundaries in order to prevent mutual interference.
